Australian Swing Dance Championships
Join in the fun and excitement of competing in the Australian Swing Dancing Championships! A variety of events will cater for all level of dancers and give everyone a chance of taking home a National Title.
Training and participating in competitions is a great way to progress with your own dancing and working towards a goal is a great motivator to take your dancing to the next level. The support and friendship between fellow dancers within the competition will encourage you to perform at your best.
The Australian Swing Dancing Championships are open to all to enter. We will not discriminate nor Judge any dancer on gender, race, sexuality, or religious beliefs. We invite and encourage all dancers to enter and have the freedom to dance as lead or follow. We just want to see you swing out and have fun on the dance floor!
All Heats and Finals will be held on Friday night at the Balmain Town Hall, including Solo Jazz.
Mix n Match
Lindy Hop Juniors
Lindy Hop Apprentice (under 2 years experience)
Strictly Lindy Hop (over 2 years experience)
Balboa and Bal Swing will be allowed to be danced. This event will be danced as a Jam style, with couples dancing to 2 phrases at a time. Six couples will be brought back for the final.
mix n match
Mix n Match is the event that was previously titled Jack n Jill. We encourage everyone to enter this event. Feel free to dance as a lead or a follow, regardless of gender. The best dancers within our community can usually dance both roles, and have as much fun dancing either role.
Mix n Match will be danced as an All Skate Event. Dancers will have 3 rotations with different partners during the heats. Six leads and six follows will be brought back for the final.
Final will be danced as an All Skate and will judged as a couple. Mix n Match is the event to show your skills as a great lead or follow, and the versatility you hold as a dancer. The ability to dance with any partner is the ultimate skill of a swing dancer as we strive to be a great social dancer.
Love the quicker tempos, and flying feet? This is the event for you. This event will showcase the wild, crazy, anything goes feeling of Lindy Hop, that is what some claim to be the essence of the dance.
This event will be danced with heats as All Skate, then final as phrased Jam style, danced as two phrases 8 x 8’s, with two Shines per couple. All Skate warm up prior and a judged All Skate post Shines, to conclude the event.
BPM’s will range from 190 - 250bpm.
Minimum of three couples per team. Teams to provide their own music, with a minimum song length of 2.15mins and a maximum of 3.45mins. Props may be incorporated within the performance, however may not affect the dance floor surface. Props must also be set up and removed from the competition dance floor area in a timely manner. Music to be provided to the competition DJ at least one hour before scheduled event time in a CD or USB format. No responsibility will be taken for music files that will not play, through standard music players.

LINDy HOP juniors
Lindy Hop Juniors are the future of our dance and the most popular event of the night. All competitors must be under 18 years of age.
Event will be danced as a All Skate event. Six couples will be brought back for the final. Basic Lindy Hop moves should be displayed. Liftwork is permitted, however must be danced in a safe manner. Liftwork must also not interfere with fellow competitors on the dance floor.
LINDy HOP APPRENTICE
Both lead and follow must be over the age of 18 years. Both dancers must have been dancing Lindy Hop under 2 years. Event will be danced as a All Skate event. Six couples will be brought back for the final. Basic Lindy Hop moves should be displayed. Liftwork is permitted, however must be danced in a safe manner. Liftwork must also not interfere with fellow competitors on the dance floor.
STRICTLY LINDY HOP
Both lead and follow must be over 18 years of age. Event will be danced as a All Skate event. Six couples will be brought back for the final. Basic Lindy Hop moves should be displayed. Liftwork is permitted, however must be danced in a safe manner. Liftwork must also not interfere with fellow competitors on the dance floor.
Dancers will be judged on their musicality, timing, and creativity with Solo Jazz movements. Dancers will have two phrases each, danced in a Shine format and will feature an All Skate at the end. This is an event to show the energy, excitement and creative freedom that is Solo Jazz.
Judges will be looking at the following components when judging and placing competitors.
– Basic movements of dance style
– Degree of difficulty
– Dance connection
Rules are designed simply to create a safe and fair dance space. We are wanting to see dancers/couples highlight the creative freedom that Swing Dancing allows us.
Adult: $30 per person
U18’s: $5 per person
